Dick and Hank Gilbert Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Albert John (Dick) and Robert Henry (Hank) Gilbert were born in Belmont, Nevada, Dick in 1899 and Hank in 1897. Their father was Nye County Treasurer, a bar owner, and for several sessions, a member of the Nevada State Assembly. Their mother was born in Austin, Nevada in 1866. After Dick and Hank’s father died in 1920 their mother, Lida, became Nye County Treasurer. She held this position until 1934 and was probably the first elected female in Nevada. Dick and Hank were raised in Belmont with their four siblings until silver was discovered in Tonopah in 1905 and the county seat was moved from Belmont to Tonopah. These brothers lived through wars, depressions and the “Old West” and this scholarship is dedicated to their memory. Recipients shall be students from Tonopah or Hawthorne High Schools.
