Dr. Art and Elaine Broten Endowed Scholarship

In 1947, he became an instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was coach of the gymnastics team. He served as chairman of the Department of Physical Education, creating innovative programs in health, recreation and dance, and later was named the University’s athletic director. Shortly after Dr. Art Broten’s passing in the spring of 2007, the University’s Dance Program dedicated their Spring Dance Festival in his memory. In the program was the following tribute, which emphasized many reasons behind Mrs. Broten’s creation of this endowment to honor her husband’s memory. Mrs. Broten received her Master’s degree in educational counseling from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1960 and worked for twenty years in the Washoe County School District. Recipients shall be enrolled in at least 15 credits with at least a 3.0 GPA. Two awards shall be made, split between a student in the dance program and the other to an outstanding student committed to physical health and wellness.
