Charles Burkey White Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Charles Burkey White 38 (chemistry) was born in Corydon, Iowa and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1938 with a BS in Chemistry. After working as an assayer for Silver Peak mine near Tonopah, NV for two years, the superintendent of the mine suggested he attend Stanford Business School and acquire a Masters Degree in Business. He graduated in 1942 and during WWII went to work in the TNT plants in Delaware with his wife, Elizabeth Carpenter (school of premed, 1936 and daughter of Jay A. Carpenter, Dean of the Mackay School of Mines (1930 s, 40 s and 50 s). His love for chemistry never faded. He was a 50 year member and officer of the American Chemical Society and AAAS. Every night he read Scientific American and was a 50 year subscriber until his death at age 102. Recipients shall be full-time or part-time students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the Chemistry Department in the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno.
