Michael and Karen Melarkey Endowed Scholarship
A third-generation University alumnus, Michael Melarkey 72 (political science) received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco in 1975 and Master of Law in taxation from New York University in 1976. He s been an attorney for 40 years, practicing primarily in the fields of tax law and business planning. He served as counsel to the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation, a Foundation trustee, and is now a trustee emeritus and emeritus member of the Planned Giving Advisory Board. Karen Le Mond Melarkey 85 (French) is a realtor in Reno. The couple are lifetime members of the Nevada Alumni Association and Silver Benefactors in the University s Honor Court. When awarding this scholarship, preference will be given to: 1 ) students in the Native American fee waiver program; or 2) students who have demonstrated experience in or a commitment to working with Native American communities and/or demonstrated interest in Native American heritage. Recipients shall have a minimum 3.0 GPA to receive and retain the award.
